Timeline of UNICEF

1939-1945 World War II, the most destructive war in human history, is fought throughout Europe and the Pacific.

December 1946 The International Childrens Emergency Fund (ICEEF) is created to help children in Europe after World War II.

1950 The United Nations General Assembly votes to expand ICEFs role.

1953 ICEF becomes UNICEF, a permanent part of the United Nations.

1959 The Unites Nations General  Assembly adopts the Declaration of Rights of the Child.

1965 UNICEF receives the Nobel Peace Prize for "the promotion of brotherhood among nations".

1979 UNICEF decleares the International Year of the Child More than 148 countries take part.

1981 The World Health Assembly approves the International Code of Marketing of Breast Milk Substitutes   to encourage breastfeeding.

1982 Top health and nutrition experts neet to create a formula known as GOBL: Growth monitoring, Oral  rehydration, Breast feeding, Immunization.

1987 UNICEF study,"Adjustment with a Human Face," is released, discussing ten countries where children are endantered because of the nations' debt Load.

1989 The UN General Assembly adops the convention on the Right of the Child.

1990 World summit for Children, a gathering of government Leaders, takes place at UN headquarters in New York City.

1996 UNICEF support an important study, "The Impact of Armed Conflect on Children." The stuey focusws on how children of the world are harmed by war.

2001 UNICEF launches the "Say Yes for Children" campaing.

2003 UNICEF anounces the "25 by 2005" reading literacy for girls initiative.

2005 UNICEF embraces Millennium Development Goals.
